A Day of Gratitude, Remembrance, and Buddhist Blessings at an Ancient Temple Near Longmen Grottoes

On August 27, 2026, the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, Luoyang Guanghua Temple held its regular First and Fifteenth Day Sutra Chanting and Prayer Ceremony, coinciding with the traditional Buddhist Ullambana Festival, also known as “Buddha’s Joyful Day.”

On this meaningful occasion, monastics and visitors gathered at the ancient temple to participate in solemn chanting practices, offering prayers for peace, blessings, and wisdom while reflecting on gratitude, compassion, and filial respect.

Located on the western hillside of Longmen Village in Luoyang, Henan Province, beside the world-renowned Longmen Grottoes, Guanghua Temple is a historic Buddhist sanctuary with more than a thousand years of cultural heritage. As one of the Ten Temples of Longmen and an important ancestral site of Tang Dynasty Esoteric Buddhism, the temple has played a significant role in the transmission of Buddhist culture throughout East Asia.

A Thousand-Year Buddhist Sanctuary of Tang Dynasty Heritage

The history of Guanghua Temple can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty. The temple was originally the pagoda courtyard of the Indian Buddhist master Śubhākara-siṃha (Shanwuwei), one of the three great masters who introduced Esoteric Buddhist teachings to China during the Kaiyuan era, together with Vajrabodhi and Amoghavajra.

In 758 AD, during the reign of Emperor Suzong of the Tang Dynasty, General Guo Ziyi submitted a memorial requesting the reconstruction of the site as a temple, officially establishing Guanghua Temple as an important Buddhist center.

Today, the temple continues to preserve this profound heritage through historic landmarks such as the Shanwuwei Pagoda and the Memorial Hall of the Kaiyuan Three Great Masters, honoring the monks who contributed to the development and spread of Chinese Esoteric Buddhism.

Before reaching the temple halls, visitors walk up the 199 stone steps in front of the mountain gate. This gradual ascent creates a quiet transition from the outside world into a sacred space, allowing visitors to slow their pace and approach the temple with a peaceful and respectful mind.

The Peaceful Atmosphere of the Ullambana Festival Ceremony

During the ceremony, the sound of Buddhist chanting filled the temple halls. Guided by the monastic community, devotees gathered together to recite sutras, offer prayers, and cultivate sincerity through traditional Buddhist practices.

The melodic sound of Fanbai (Buddhist ceremonial chanting) echoed through the ancient halls, creating a calm and contemplative atmosphere. Through chanting, bowing, and moments of silent reflection, participants were able to settle their minds and experience a sense of inner peace.

The Ullambana Festival, celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, carries deep cultural meaning in Buddhist tradition. It is a day dedicated to gratitude, remembrance, and filial devotion — a time to honor ancestors, express appreciation toward family, and cultivate compassion toward all beings.

For many visitors, the ceremony is not only a religious practice but also a meaningful cultural experience that reflects universal values shared across cultures: respect, kindness, gratitude, and connection.

A Temple Experience Shared with the Community

On the day of the ceremony, Luoyang Guanghua Temple welcomed visitors free of charge and provided complimentary vegetarian meals for devotees and guests.

After the prayer ceremony, visitors gathered to enjoy a simple vegetarian meal offered by the temple. Although humble in appearance, the meal represents the traditional Buddhist practice of generosity and hospitality — a warm connection between the temple and the community.

The monthly First and Fifteenth Day ceremonies and vegetarian offerings allow visitors from different backgrounds to experience the living traditions of Chinese Buddhism in an open and welcoming environment.

Continuing a Living Buddhist Tradition at Longmen

From the ancient stone steps leading to the temple, to the peaceful sound of chanting within the halls; from the solemn Ullambana Festival ceremony to the shared vegetarian meal, every moment at Guanghua Temple reflects the continuation of a thousand-year-old Buddhist tradition.

Today, Luoyang Guanghua Temple remains not only a place of spiritual practice but also a cultural bridge connecting visitors from around the world with the history, philosophy, and peaceful atmosphere of Chinese Buddhism.

Through its regular First and Fifteenth Day Sutra Chanting and Prayer Ceremonies, the temple continues to welcome visitors to experience the beauty of Buddhist heritage beside the timeless landscape of the Longmen Grottoes.
